Press Release: DREAMERS CAMPAIGN AGAINST ROMNEY IN TEXAS
Across Texas, from Fort Worth to Dallas, San Antonio to Houston, DREAMers came out to voice their support for the DREAM Act. At every event, DREAMers came out in strong numbers to wave signs and chant “VETO ROMNEY” and push for the DREAM Act.
The DREAM Act, which stands for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors, was introduced nearly a decade ago and has undergone several changes over the years. The legislation is designed to grant legal status to undocumented students who came to the United States as children.
In Fort Worth, two Latino youth, Erika and Cesar were able to bring in a large sign which read “Self-Deportation is not an option for my DREAM” to a rally at Southwest Office System’s headquarters. As they chanted “Education not deportation,” the police and Romney’s aids quickly tore the sign away, injuring Erika in the process as she was placed in a tough headlock. They were then held by the police, Romney aides, and Secret Service for around an hour..
At each location, DREAMers came out by the dozen to express their support for the Veto Romney campaign, as well as their desire for the DREAM Act. In a state which is steadily turning Latino, a vulnerable portion of the Latino community, one which is heavily sympathized with by the Latino community in general, came out to strongly declare that Mitt Romney is not their choice. With 91% of the Latino community in favor of the DREAM Act according to a Univision poll and Latinos poised to deliver the election from vital swing states, this headache won’t be leaving Mitt Romney any time soon.
